Millions of drivers go on driving everyday without proper knowledge of what to do in the event of a crash. From a simple bender fender to a pile-up what you do immediately after the accident can mean the difference between a successful insurance cover or not. First of all, asses the extent of damage and check on all drivers and passengers involved, if you suspect a medical problem, call for help. Then you should call the police for advice and assistance in case the accident happens on the freeway and the risk of a crash being caused by your’s is very imminent (most cases require you not to move the vehicles in question but with the exception of more accidents arising that vehicles are moved till police and other emergency services arrive). If possible, take pictures (SAFELY) while trying not to get you run over by other drivers.
A picture can establish fault early on and insurance agencies know about these matters. If there are any witnesses, ask if they would be willing to assist you in your claim and get their contact information if they approve. Present all required documents that are asked of you by the attending officer which makes the processing of the scene faster and gets you back to your traveling fast. Be honest and frank with the insurance company with respect to establishing fault and present all supporting documents, pictures, etc ASAP to speed up the processing of your claims. It would be better to work with your insurance than to get denied the next time you apply for auto insurance. With these tips in mind, you can rest easy that the next fender bender would be a breeze, but please don’t make it a habit!
